I don't like my sales rep. What should I do?

Answered by Dick Gorelick

Question:
I don't like the newly appointed salesperson representing my primary prepress and print supplier. What should I do?

Answer:
Step back a minute. Accept the fact that not every buyer-seller relationship is wonderful and that some relationships which started out rocky have grown to a high level of compatibility.
Make a list:

  • What would you like to change about the behavior and activities of your new rep?

  • Is it the call frequency?

  • Does the rep "come on too strong?"

  • Does he/she not offer the advice and assistance of the former rep?
If these are among the problems, you owe it to yourself and to the sales rep to schedule a one-on-one meeting at which you dispassionately and confidentially discuss the issue(s). Present your position in a constructive manner but do express yourself in an unmistakable fashion. Explain exactly what you'd like to have happen.

If your problem with the salesperson involves lack of trust, clearly offensive behavior, or some other issue that you think cannot be reconciled, you may eventually need to contact your supplier's sales manager. Here again, don't personalize your unhappiness. Never lose sight of the objective: a relationship in which you are extended the respect and assistance you need and have come to expect.
