No More QuarkXPress Passport?

Answered by Jay Nelson, Editor and Publisher, Design Tools Monthly

Question:
Over the years, we've had a love/hate relationship with Quark's multilingual version of QuarkXPress, called Passport. Do I understand that QuarkXPress 8 puts Passport to rest? And if so, what does that mean for printers?

Answer:
This is probably the best news you'll hear this week: QuarkXPress 8 supports more than 30 languages straight out of the box. Your many years of uncertainty about whether you can accept files in various languages from QuarkXPress Passport is over.

Every copy of QuarkXPress 8, no matter what language it uses for its interface, is able to create, open, save, edit, and output QuarkXPress documents in any language. Also, as I understand it, QuarkXPress 8 will also be able to open any document created by any version of QuarkXPress Passport! This means that by having QuarkXPress 8, you will be able to open any document ever created by a QuarkXPress product in any language -- back to version 3.

Quark has said that they will ship QuarkXPress 8 before the end of July, and if you buy or upgrade to QuarkXPress 7 before then, you'll get QuarkXPress 8 for free.
