Will There Be A QuarkXPress 8?

Answered by Jay Nelson, Editor and Publisher, Design Tools Monthly

Question:
I'm hearing crazy rumors that Quark is "abandoning the desktop" and that "there will be no further releases of QuarkXPress". Can this be true?

Answer:
I've been in this industry long enough to know that almost anything can happen. But in this case, these fears seem to be unfounded.

In my role as editorial director of PlanetQuark.com, I need to keep up on these rumors, and Quark keeps me pretty well informed about what's happening. I know for a fact that QuarkXPress 8 is quite far along in development, and I've asked the executives and product managers point-blank about the future of QuarkXPress. On every occasion, they promised me (and by extension, all the readers of Design Tools Monthly and PlanetQuark.com) that the desktop version of QuarkXPress is at the core of Quark's future roadmap.

In fact, just a few days ago Quark sent out a press release about their new Quark Dynamic Publishing Solution, and in the release was this quote from Quark's CEO, Ray Schiavone:

"QuarkXPress is a valuable and widely-used graphic design and page layout tool in its own right, and will play an integral role in Quark DPS. QuarkXPress is and always will be the foundation of our product portfolio and we will continue to invest in it to meet the needs of individual designers and large organizations alike."

That seems pretty clear to me.
