Are there any resources to help me find or become a print broker?
Answered by Vince Mallardi, Former Chairman, Printing Brokerage/Buyers Association International
Question:
After having spent 15 years in the printing industry as a web pressman, I'd like to become a print broker. Do you know of a resource that can help me get started? I would also like to know if there are any licensing requirements for brokers.

Answer:
There are over 14,000 printing intermediaries in the U.S. doing over $14 billion annually. They operate under three methods:
- Group buying services/outsourcers
- Value-added resellers (VARs)
- Manufacturer's independent reps
There are many resources for prospective printing brokers including a certification program (C.P.B.), all of which are through the Printing Brokerage/Buyers Association International
www.pbbai.net. There is no licensing but an increasing number of end-use buyers ask for bonding or other security because of perceived increased risks in third party procurement. PB/BA member brokerages must pass a credit and reference check and your experience as a pressman would be a positive. However, don't go into this field without sufficient cash to cover three months' payables, and at least $500K in committed forward business.
