Question:
Regarding web-printed perfect-bound magazine production, what is the allowable variance for alignment across the gutter for a spread ad?

Answer:
Michael Rodriguez, technical director, R.R. Donnelley & Sons, says, "We quote +/- 1/16" on fold and cut-off variance. This could create an offset in alignment or crossover up to 1/8", should one signature be off by a 1/16" in one direction and 1/16" in the other." Rodriguez adds that these figures may vary from plant to plant, and from printer to printer, so it's best to check with your printer to make certain that you are following the exact specifications to which your plant adheres.
