New ideas for package printing

What is the most overlooked source of new ideas and innovation in package printing?

In the fast-paced world of getting products to market, consumer product companies are so caught up in execution that they rarely have time for innovation. Packaging converters are spending millions of dollars each year to develop new ways of delivering products to consumers.

My experience has shown that converters are much better at developing new products and services than they are at marketing them. This means that there are many new ideas out there, but you may have to "find them" yourself. In many cases, this can be done simply by asking your suppliers, "What is new?" Your suppliers--if they know your needs the way they should--are in the best position to advise you about capabilities that apply most closely to your specific needs.

Trade publications are another great source of innovative ideas. Make it a point to keep tabs on the trades, but don't just look at yours. Expand your horizons by reviewing the trades of your suppliers as well. This way you can see what issues confront your suppliers and guide them to a better understanding of your needs.

In short, stay informed and make it a regular practice--not just at contract time-- to ask your suppliers, "What's new out there?"
